Research in Motion-RIM commits Suicide



Blackberry Messenger better known as BBM has always been a unique characteristic of the Blackberry Smartphone; most people kept the device and continued to purchase it because of that one feature. Sure Android and Apple have provided and immense amount of competition but the BBM app helped RIM to keep its head above troubled waters. 

But RIM went deranged on whose advice, I don’t know… and decided to offer the BBM service to its major competitors who, not to mention are doing some much better than RIM. Essentially RIM has without a doubt committed suicide and blindly too. 

BBM and BBM connected apps to a lesser extent were the last straw that kept RIM alive. According to International Business Times Alistair Charlton, “the BBM chat application for Android and iPhone was downloaded more than 10 million times within its first 24 hours, as BlackBerry overcomes initial launch setbacks.”

Might I highlight  the last part of that sentence “as BlackBerry overcomes initial launch setbacks”…were theses set back due to RIM having second thoughts about handing over its last bit of power to its competitors? Well maybe so but they did do it anyway because they re-launched the app again on October 21 following prior “setbacks” of the first launch in September, obviously receiving a “warm Welcome” from iphone and android users around the world.

But, there is news that RIM is currently looking for a buyer interested in acquiring either the company as a whole, or breaking it up and taking whatever is deemed to be of value. According to Charltons article there is a “tentative £3 billion offer from Fairfax Financial Holdings of Canada, and Rim has until 4 November to seek a higher offer before the process of accepting the buyout can begin… However, reports this week claim Chinese computer maker Lenovo is also considering a bid for the company...”

Well to that all I can say is that undeniably the current blackberry phone makers have had enough of that industry and maybe this successful attempt of ‘Suicide’ was a unintelligent way of doing it but... on the bright side now users on all Smartphone platforms are in included in the BBM circle.

Evidently, either way instant messaging will continue with or without RIM.

    I agree on the thought about them stalling the launch,seemed like RIM were having second thoughts to me as well,but they have undoubtedly paved the way for having a cellphone to aid business persons constantly on the go.So i guess they're satisfied with that as they disappear but will be remembered because of BBM

      Never change because of change sake. Always have a purpose and goal that would guide you through change. That is belief when it comes to change.

      No doubt, they actually have to be given respect where respect is due. They were the ones who taught us how to be more productive on-the-go. Nevertheless, being sentimental and nostalgic would not help us now. If they are committing suicide, I guess it is similar to a man drowning...he will hold on to a straw in attempt to stay afloat. It is a pity to see them go but let us welcome the new technologies and advances by Samsung, Apple, Google, etc. that RIM failed to implement.

      Dear Sir, I was speaking in light of Technology, "keeping up with the times" Now while what your saying is true I think it applies more to Staying true to one's self but its not as justifiable in the Tech World,...it simply doesn't make much sense to be living in a digital age with analog ways

    I definitely agree that they have committed suicide who every advice them to do that was not looking out for them any how i will accept it gladly since i no longer use a Blackberry phone anymore.
