Stupified Uses of Technology in Clothing

You might say that I like writing about “Smartware” and for this post I use this term loosely, but it’s just that I can’t believe that people will actually invent “certain things.”

You see the bias thing about history is that it only records the best, brightest and most influential technological inventions that in one way or the other revolutionized our societies, but what gets me is that it never documents some of the ludicrous creations of all times...Sorry...No Not really...

I mean I was just browsing right, and I came upon an article about “SOLAR POWERED BIKINIS AND BATHING SUITS” I mean like REALLY!!

The article describes it as a “cyber geek fetish wear,” and yes, while I agree it would be remiss of me not to mention some of the cool capabilities of this device/wear. The panel-clad bathing suit provides a way for beach goers to charge up their electronics using "five volts at under an amp" of the Sun’s rays. Now this “Genius Invention” was started by Brooklyn-based designer Andrew Schneider in 20011, who spent approximately 80 hours on each bikini, hand-stitching super-slim, flexible photovoltaic film strips together using conductive thread. (At this point I’m SMH).

But it’s worth it maybe...if the Solar Bikini can juice up iPhones and other small electronics. According to a post on Ecouterre Wearable Technology by Kestrel Jenkins, “the is piece of high-tech clothing...is coming in at just under $200.”

Oh you’re worried about the swimming part? Well don’t because the solar bikini is totally compatible with water swimming...IF LoL... you remember to disconnect your devices and dry out the USB ports before you connect anything else. The article says that this is made possible since the bikini transmits its power directly to your electronics and no actual energy is stored.

Oh and Guys it’s not only for the ladies if you are interested the designer is working on a pair of trunks that chills beer, (SMH) which the article says is a solid-state heat pump known as a Peltier junction and acts as a cooling device.

Oh well, in recent time we have seen much, I mean from pants that charge your iPod, shirts that help to regulate your body temperature to jackets that harness energy. I’ve heard of disappearing tops, spandex laced with caffeine just name it.

All together, energy generating clothing is not all that bad you know, but at some point we need to strike a balance between form and function.

  1. Functional, yes..Fashionable,no..but I for one would support the idea in hopes that it actually looks less "techie" but still technological and providing yet another clean way of producing electricity.

  2. hmm very interesting but i think i would be scared to wear it in water even though they said it is safe things always tend to malfunction.

  3. This is really bizarre. I think clothing and energy should be two very distinct resources; not to be mixed.
